1452 — Battle of Los Alporchones
The Battle of Los Alporchones was a battle of the Spanish Reconquista that occurred on 17 March 1452. The battle was fought between the troops of the Emirate of Granada and the combined forces of the Kingdom of Castile and its client kingdom, the Kingdom of Murcia. The Moorish army was commanded by Malik ibn al-Abbas and the Castilian troops were commanded by Alonso Fajardo el Bravo, the head of the House of Fajardo and the Alcalde of Lorca Castle. The battle was fought in the area around the city of Lorca and resulted in a victory for the Kingdom of Castile.

1701 — Taunton by-election, 1701
The Taunton by-election of 1701 to the Parliament of England was held on 17 March 1701 in Taunton, Somerset, following the decision of the incumbent, Henry Portman, to sit in Wells. The by-election was contested by one of Portman's friends, Sir Francis Warre, 1st Baronet, and Thomas Baker, a Taunton merchant. Warre, a Tory, was elected, although Baker petitioned the result, claiming the Mayor was corrupt.

1790 — Raid on Baltischport
The raid on Baltischport occurred on 17 March 1790 during the Russo-Swedish War of 1788–1790. Two Swedish Navy frigates under Lieutenant Rudolf Cederström successfully raided the Russian-controlled port of Baltischport in the Governorate of Estonia. Leading a naval brigade of between 50 and 60 men, Cederström forced the surrender of a Russian fort after a short bombardment despite being heavily outnumbered by the fort's garrison.

After a bloody four-hour siege the small and isolated French garrison at Villafranca surrendered to Spanish regulars under Brigadier José de Mendizábal and General Pedro Caro, 3rd Marquis of la Romana.

The treaty was to resolve disputes arising from the execution of the Anglo-Dutch Treaty of 1814. For the Dutch, it was signed by Hendrik Fagel and Anton Reinhard Falck, and for the British, George Canning and Charles Williams-Wynn.

1863 — Battle of Kelly's Ford
The Battle of Kelly's Ford, also known as the Battle of Kellysville or Kelleysville, took place on March 17, 1863, in Culpeper County, Virginia, as part of the cavalry operations along the Rappahannock River during the American Civil War. It set the stage for Brandy Station and other cavalry actions of the Gettysburg Campaign that summer. Twenty-one hundred troopers of Brig. Gen. William W. Averell's Union cavalry division crossed the Rappahannock to attack the Confederate cavalry that had been harassing them that winter. Brig. Gen. Fitzhugh Lee counterattacked with a brigade of about 800 men.

1876 — Battle of Powder River
The Battle of Powder River, also known as the Reynolds Battle, occurred on Friday, March 17, 1876, in Montana Territory, United States. The attack on a Cheyenne Indian encampment by Colonel Joseph J. Reynolds initiated the Great Sioux War of 1876. Although destroying a large amount of Indian property, the attack was poorly carried out and probably solidified Lakota Sioux and northern Cheyenne resistance to the U.S. attempt to force them to sell the Black Hills and live on a reservation.

The 1877 Scottish Cup final was the fourth final of the Scottish Cup and the final of the 1876–77 Scottish Cup, the most prestigious knockout football competition in Scotland. The original match took place at Hamilton Crescent on 17 March 1877 and was contested by Vale of Leven and Rangers. The match was the first final to require two replays to decide a winner.

The Rupture of the Blockade of Arica was a naval battle of the War of the Pacific during the Blockade of Arica. The rupture was carried out by Manuel Villavicencio who commanded the BAP Unión of the Peruvian Navy. The Unión broke the Chilean blockade of the port twice in less than 8 hours on March 17, 1880.

1957 — 1957 Cebu Douglas C-47 crash
The 1957 crash of a Douglas C-47 plane named "Mt. Pinatubo" on the slopes of Mount Manunggal, Cebu, Philippines, killed the 7th President of the Philippines, Ramon Magsaysay, and 24 other passengers. The crash is estimated to have occurred at 1:40:00 AM, March 17, 1957, Philippine Standard Time (17:40:00 PM, March 16, 1957, GMT). Several high-ranking Philippine government and military officials, as well as journalists, were also among the dead. A reporter for the Philippine Herald, Nestor Mata, was the sole survivor of the accident. At the time of his death, President Magsaysay, a Nacionalista, was widely popular and was expected to easily win re-election in the November presidential elections.

The 1981 Season's Cup became the second edition of Season's Cup, an annual football match contested by the winners of the previous season's Soviet Top League and Soviet Cup competitions. The match was played at the Stadion Lokomotiv, Simferopol, on 17 March 1981, and contested by league winner Dinamo Kiev and cup winner Shakhter Donetsk. Shakhter Donetsk won it on penalty shootout.

Parliamentary elections were held in Romania on 17 March 1985. The Front of Socialist Unity and Democracy (FDUS), dominated by the Romanian Communist Party (PCR) and including other mass organisations, was the only group to contest the elections, and no prospective candidate could run for office without the Front's approval. Consequently, FDUS candidates won all 369 seats in the Great National Assembly, also ensuring the rubber-stamp confirmation of Nicolae Ceaușescu as President of Romania.

Avianca Flight 410 was a Boeing 727-21 that crashed at 13:17 on 17 March 1988, near Cúcuta, Colombia, which occurred shortly after takeoff during a scheduled flight when it flew into a mountain. All 143 people on board were killed. It was the deadliest aviation accident to occur in Colombia until American Airlines Flight 965.

1996 — Sudanese general election, 1996
General elections were held in Sudan to elect a President and National Assembly between 2 and 17 March 1996. They were the first elections since 1986 due to a military coup in 1989, and the first simultaneous elections for the presidency and National Assembly. 125 members of the 400-seat National Assembly had been nominated before the election, leaving 275 seats to be elected (of which 51 were ultimately uncontested). There were no political parties at the time, and all candidates ran as independents. In the presidential election, 40 candidates ran against incumbent Omar al-Bashir, who emerged victorious with 75.4% of the vote.

Presidential elections was held in Zimbabwe on 16 and 17 March 1996. The elections were contested by the incumbent President Robert Mugabe, Zimbabwe Rhodesia-era Prime Minister Abel Muzorewa, and ZANU-Ndonga leader Ndabaningi Sithole. Mugabe won, claiming over 90% of the vote, though turnout was just 32.3%, largely as a result of Sithole and Muzorewa withdrawing their candidacies shortly before the election (though their names remained on the ballot).

WrestleMania X8 was the eighteenth annual WrestleMania professional wrestling pay-per-view produced by the World Wrestling Federation (WWF). It took place on March 17, 2002, at the SkyDome in Toronto, the second WrestleMania at that venue (following WrestleMania VI in 1990). The event marked the final WrestleMania event under the WWF name. The record-breaking attendance for the SkyDome of 68,237 grossed approximately $6.1 million CAD ($3.9 million USD). WrestleMania weekend also included WWF Fan Axxess at the Canadian National Exhibition's Automotive Building. The tournament consisted of a semi-final round of four four-man elimination matches and a final match with the winners of each of the semi-finals facing off in an elimination match until only one man remained. The final of the 2002 tournament pitted Canek, Pirata Morgan, Cibernético and Octagón against each other.

Homenaje a Dos Leyendas 2006 (Spanish for "Homage to Two Legends") is an annual professional wrestling major event produced by Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre (CMLL) that took place on March 17, 2006 Arena México, Mexico City, Mexico. The event honored Lucha Libre Legends CMLL founder Salvador Lutteroth (who is always honored at the Dos Leyendas event). The main event was a Lucha de Apuestas, hair vs. hair match between Universo 2000 and Perro Aguayo Jr.. The background for this match went back beyond the previous year's Homenaje a Dos Leyendas show where Aguayo and his father Perro Aguayo defeated Universo 2000's brothers (Cien Caras and Máscara Año 2000) in an Apuesta match.

Presidential elections were held in East Timor on 17 March 2012, with a second round on 16 April. Incumbent president José Ramos-Horta, who was eligible for a second and final term as president, announced that he would seek nomination to be a candidate in the election. Prisión Fatal (2013) was a professional wrestling major event, produced by the Mexico based International Wrestling Revolution Group (IWRG) professional wrestling promotion. The event took on March 17, 2013, at "Arena Naucalpan" in Naucalpan, State of Mexico, IWRG's main venue. The main event was the eponymous Prisión Fatal (Spanish for "Fatal Prison") Steel cage match where the last person remaining in the cage was forced to unmasked or shaved bald as per the match stipulation. The Prisión Fatal match included Rayo de Jalisco, Jr., Máscara Año 2000, Jr., Cien Caras, Jr. and Pirata Morgan.

The clubs contesting the 2013 final were SPL clubs, St Mirren and Hearts. As Hearts finished in the top five of the SPL, they entered the League Cup in the third round. They made a convincing start, defeating Livingston in third round.
