1701 — Battle of Dartsedo
The Battle of Dartsedo was fought on January 28, 1701 between the Chinese and Tibetan armies over the control of the strategic border town of Dartsedo. The town of Dartsedo was an important trade center between Tibet and China, and for centuries its importance lay on the tea-horse trade. Sino-Tibetan trade in Dartsedo continued to expand as the demand for Chinese products in Tibet grew. The Tibetan interest in Dartsedo led to a growing official presence in the town and taking advantage of the anarchy that created after the fall of the Ming dynasty, the Tibetans took control of the town and stationed a garrison and officials in it.

The British were led by Sir Harry Smith, while the Sikhs were led by Ranjodh Singh Majithia. Britain's victory in the battle is sometimes regarded as the turning point in the First Anglo-Sikh War.

1868 — Battle of Awa
The Battle of Awa (阿波沖海戦 Awa oki kaisen) occurred on 28 January 1868 during the Boshin War in Japan, in the area of Awa Bay near Osaka. Involving ships of the Tokugawa Shogunate and Satsuma vessels loyal to the imperial court in Kyoto, the battle was the second naval battle in Japanese history between modern naval forces (after the 1863 Battle of Shimonoseki Straits). Enomoto Takeaki led the Shogunal navy to victory at Awa, in one of the few Tokugawa successes of the Boshin War, one day after the start of the land Battle of Toba-Fushimi (which the Shogunate lost to the Imperial forces).

The Battle of Kuruyuki or Battle of Curuyuqui was fought near the town of Cuevo, Bolivia on January 28, 1892. The combatants were the Eastern Bolivian Guaraní (called Chiriguanos at that time) and a force made up of Bolivian military, militia, and Chiriguanos friendly to the government and Christianity. Often described as a massacre, the battle resulted in an overwhelming victory by the government forces.

The Battle of Al-Regeai (Arabic: معركة الرقعي) also known as Battle of Atheriyat (named by the Ikhwan) in Kuwait was a fight between approximately 500 Ikhwan horsemen and the Kuwaiti military. It occurred on 28 January 1928. It was the final significant military engagement in Kuwait's early historical period. It transpired under the rule of Sheikh Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, the 10th ruler of the Sheikhdom of Kuwait.

1943 — Shelling of Port Gregory
The shelling of Port Gregory took place on 28 January 1943 during World War II. The attack was conducted by the Japanese submarine I-165 under the command of Lieutenant Commander Tatenosuke Tosu as part of the attempts to divert Allied attention away from the evacuation of Guadalcanal in the Solomon Islands. None of the ten shells fired at Port Gregory caused any damage, and the attack was not noticed by the Allied naval authorities until a radio signal sent by Tosu was intercepted and decoded a week later.

General elections were held in Senegal on 28 January 1973 to elect a President and National Assembly. At the time the country was a one-party state, with the Senegalese Progressive Union (UPS) as the sole legal party, As a result, its leader, Léopold Sédar Senghor, was the only candidate in the presidential election and was re-elected unopposed. In the National Assembly election, voters were presented with a list of 100 UPS candidates (for the 100 seats) to vote for. Voter turnout was 93.0% in the parliamentary elections and 97% in the presidential election.

1986 — STS-51-L
STS-51-L was the 25th flight of the American Space Shuttle program, and the tenth mission of the Space Shuttle Challenger, which lifted-off from Launch Complex 39-B, at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, on January 28, 1986. The mission ended in catastrophic failure with the destruction of Challenger, starting at 73 seconds after lift-off, and the death of all seven crew members. The Rogers Commission determined that the cause of the destruction was due to the failure of an O-ring seal on the starboard Solid Rocket Booster (SRB). This flight marked the first time a non-government civilian, schoolteacher Christa McAuliffe, had flown aboard the Space Shuttle.

Royal Rumble (2007) was the twentieth annual Royal Rumble professional wrestling pay-per-view event produced by World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE). This marked the first time that the new ECW brand participated in the Royal Rumble match. 2026 — 2026 Baramati Learjet 45 crash
On 28 January 2026, a Learjet 45 operated by VSR Ventures crashed during a charter flight from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in Mumbai to Baramati Airport in Maharashtra, India, killing the Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Ajit Pawar, as well as all four other occupants. The crash was determined to be in low visibility and heavy fog.
